Seeking a skilled Physician Assistant (General Surgery) for a locum tenens opportunity in Potsdam, NY. This role offers a dynamic mix of OR first assist, inpatient rounding, and surgical floor coverage, with exposure to General Surgery, Orthopedics, and OB/GYN cases.

Schedule & Coverage
  • Day shifts: 7:00 AM 3:00 PM
  • Additional call options:
    • Weekday call: 7a 5p or 3p 11p
    • Weekend call: Friday 5p Monday 7a
  • Weeknight call: up to 4 shifts/month (optional)
  • Weekend rounding: Saturday Sunday, 8:00 AM 12:00 PM
  • Coverage needs vary by month (block assignments available)
  • Potential for ongoing full-time coverage beyond summer assignments
  • Start Date: 06/09/2026
  • Contract Duration: 4 weeks (initial assignment window, extension possible)
Practice Setting
  • Acute care hospital (109 beds)
  • Level I trauma adjacent surgical environment
  • EMR: Epic
  • Combination of OR, inpatient unit, and surgical floor coverage
  • Patient population: Adult (18+)
️ Clinical Responsibilities
  • First assist in the operating room for general surgery cases
  • Surgical floor rounding, progress notes, admissions, and discharges
  • Assist with OB/GYN and orthopedic surgical patients
  • Perform surgical tasks including:
    • Hemostasis and bleeding control
    • Wound closure (staples, sutures, adhesives)
    • Retraction, suctioning, and exposure assistance
    • Drainage and irrigation support
  • Manage post-operative care and collaborate with surgical teams
  • Participate in consults and care coordination
Required Qualifications
  • Active New York State PA license
  • Minimum 2 years of recent surgical experience
  • Required certifications: BLS, ACLS, ATLS
  • Strong OR first assist experience preferred
  • Robotics experience highly preferred
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills
Team Structure
  • 1 PA/NP currently on staff
  • Anesthesia present in all procedures
  • LPN support on surgical floor
  • Provider works closely with multidisciplinary surgical teams
Additional Details
  • OR closure noted on 7/3 (call-only coverage required for emergencies)
  • Strict hospital policies (professional appearance, no phone use in clinical areas)
  • Credentialing requirements include clean work history (no unexplained gaps >30 days)
  • Malpractice documentation required if applicable
